Monirul Islam Residence

  • Location: Bamundi, Meherpur

  • Area: 34 ft × 40 ft Plot (Approx. 1,200 sq. ft.)

  • Scope: Architectural Design for a Compact Multi-Family Duplex

The Challenge

Maximizing a narrow 34×40 ft semi-urban plot to comfortably accommodate three brothers and their growing families, without the space feeling like two stacked apartments. The design had to balance financial practicality—allowing for ground-floor rental income—with the unique, quiet pressure of a hometown project, where architectural decisions directly impact the daily lives of the community.

The Solution: Function, Privacy, and Patience

We anchored the design in function over form, first resolving tight parking access and turning radii to keep the site highly usable. The ground floor operates as a fully independent rental unit, ensuring financial flexibility without compromising the privacy of the owner’s residence above. By intentionally avoiding unnecessary vertical expansion, we focused on creating a highly efficient, breathable two-storey experience that opens up to southern breezes, proving that thoughtful, small-scale architecture can elevate everyday living standards.

Functional Highlights

  • Compact Duplex Planning: A highly efficient spatial layout that accommodates a large extended family without an inch of wasted space.

  • Independent Zoning: Clear, deliberate separation between the ground-floor rental unit and the upper-level owner’s floor to ensure absolute privacy.

  • Optimized Site Access: Precisely calculated parking provision and turning radius, overcoming the constraints of the tight footprint.

  • South-Facing Rooftop: A semi-outdoor family lounge designed for natural airflow, structurally prepared for pergola seating and a future roof garden.

  • The Long Game: Part of an ongoing, quiet architectural experiment in Bamundi to gradually raise the local standard of living through patient, locally rooted design.
